Since the pound is defined as 0.45359237 kilograms (kg) it can be calculated from pounds to kg from this. However it’s more common to convert according to method 1 bellow.
1 kg = 2.2046 pounds is not 100% right but often close enough and commonly used when converting pounds to kg or converting pounds to kg. So pounds to kg then becomes:
pounds / 2.2046 = kilos OR kilos x 2.2046 = pounds.
This is exact and uses the avoirdupois definition:
pounds x 0.45359237 = kilos OR or kilos / 0.45359237 = pounds.
The first method is easier to remember an more often used but the second is totally correct but maybe not as easy to calculate fast in your head.
Example 1 – convert 125 pounds
Let’s try to convert pounds to kg according to the first method and find out the 125 pounds kg representation.
125 pounds / 2.2046 = 56.6996 kg
Now let’s try that again according to the second method.
125 pounds x 0.45359237 = 56.6990 kg
The differences between the results using two methods is very small, but still the second method is 100% correct.
Example 2 – convert 65 kg
Let’s try to convert 65 kg into pounds according to the first method.
65 kg x 2.2046 = 143.2990 pounds
Now let’s try that again according to second method.
65 kg / 0.45359237 = 143.3005 pounds
No mater wich method we use we still end up with about 143 pounds in kg is 65 kg. Still the second one is the most correct.
If you want to make it easy on yourself use the pounds to kg calculator.
